What has defined the cultural landscape of South Asia and the so-called “Muslim World” over the last few decades? Was it 9/11 and the War on Terror? The Arab Spring? Bollywood going global? The rise of Coke Studio? Or was it cricket, fashion, food, migration, or the growing influence of a community finally telling its own stories on a global stage? Beyond East & West is a multi-sensory exhibition exploring the events, narratives and cultural moments that shaped a generation. Beginning with the legacy of Orientalism, the exhibit traces how South Asia and the so-called “Muslim World” have been represented and reimagined over time. The walk-through will be followed by a conversation on cultural memory, diaspora and the possibilities of storytelling beyond the traditional boundaries of “East” and “West.” At its core, the exhibition will invite the community of the global majority to explore their own narratives and cultural landscape to imagine what comes next.
