Thirty years after the release of King Changó’s landmark 1996 self-titled debut album, MELTING POT ALL-STARS brings together original members of the legendary New York City ska band for a special 30th anniversary celebration. King Changó’s explosive melting pot of ska, reggae, dub, cumbia, Latin rhythms, punk and rock helped establish the band as a pioneer of the Latin alternative movement. Released by David Byrne’s Luaka Bop Records in 1996, the album featured favorites including “Melting Pot,” “Latin Ska,” “Confesión” and “Revolution/Cumbia Reggae.” The night is also a homecoming. It was at SOB’s that David Byrne first saw King Changó opening for Café Tacuba, an encounter that led to the band signing with his Luaka Bop label. Three decades later, MELTING POT ALL-STARS return to SOB’s to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the album, the music they helped create, and the wild cultural melting pot that brought it all together. MELTING POT ALL-STARS features original King Changó members and musicians from the 1996 album: Glenda Lee (bass), Luis “Pulpo” Ruiz (drums), Miguel Oldenburg (guitar), Martin Perna (tenor sax), Michael Wagner (trombone) and Fernando Velez (percussion), along with special guests.
