With a voice described as “big, percussive, melodic, angelic, freaky, and scalding” (KALW) and “full of fury, intensity, vulnerability, and absurdity” (I Care If You Listen), Mai Khôi will present original songs backed her fiery jazz-punk-experimental-art song fusion band, Mai Khôi & the Dissidents. Her incisive lyrics tackle some of the most pressing social justice issues of our time, including government censorship, police brutality, LGBTQ+ rights, sexism, and the rise of the authoritarian right. The music and arrangements by pianist Mark Micchelli range from quiet lullabies to intricate hockets to noisy free-for-alls, supported by the improvisational prowess of saxophonist Jeff Siegfried, bassist Eli Namay, and drummer PJ Roduta.
