downbeat detection returns on Thursday September 17th. Going deeper and more dubbed out than ever before with a night of essential, soulful and forward thinking electronics across the spectrum of dub. Our headliner is Gavsborg, founder of Equiknoxx Music, a unique and exceptional global artist with an utterly distinct body of work, style and point of view. The East Kingston, Jamaica native, now based in Berlin, had audiences stunned at Dripping earlier this summer, with another showcase on the books for Making Time shortly after DBD006. Gavsborg’s fusion of leftfield dancehall, dub and varying strains of roots influence dance is unified by the hand of a deeply skilled producer and selector, forming a wholly original experience unlike anything else. The night will open with a showcase from Chicago-based deep ambient dub label Kino Disk. Fresh on the heels of several coveted and highly limited dub-plate releases, as well as most recent forthcoming and essential compilation American Dub Electronics, Kino Disk will present a b2b DJ set between label runner 8004 and multi-talented producer and visual artist HPIN. Max Watts closes the night, playing a back to back vinyl set with DBD organizer Spiral Eddie. Watts is a unique and inimitable producer of various strains of techno, clearly rooted in the sounds of the originators yet completely distinct in signature and quality, simultaneously revered as a relentless and fearless turntable technician. Founding the minimal, percussive Limited Network label and working under the tutelage of Mike Banks (Underground Resistance) after moving to Detroit, Watts has established an imprint of spare, white label-esque hardware explorations that totally sidestep the excesses of modern electronic music. Max and I met several years ago in Japan and quickly bonded over a shared commitment to the foundational ethos, sounds and aesthetics of Detroit techno.
